Is makeup useful during pregnancy?
Have you heard of the glowing, glowing complexion of pregnant women? Know that this is not a myth: many future mothers notice, from the second trimester, that their skin is prettier, more radiant, naturally healthier. Thank you hormones (and increasing blood volume)! In this case, you may want to adopt lighter makeup – or even skip the makeup box! - and let your skin breathe.
Others, less fortunate, will experience some skin imperfections (always due to this hormonal upheaval), acne , dark circles following poor sleep, or a pregnancy mask which speckles their face with brown spots ...Nothing like that than makeup to camouflage these small skin defects and regain a healthy glow! Please note that our moisturizing cream with Crème Radieuse is a perfect makeup base , in addition to preventing the pregnancy mask from intensifying ;-)
Before rushing headlong into your usual make-up routine (foundation, concealer, powder, blush, mascara, eyeliner, gloss, etc.), don't forget to take a closer look at the ingredients in your favorite beauty products !
Makeup and pregnancy: precautions to take
Unsurprisingly, makeup, like most so-called “conventional” skincare creams, is full of chemical substances that are not recommended during pregnancy.
Everything you apply to your skin passes the skin barrier , and can then cross the placenta to reach the baby , with consequences that can be serious for their health : developmental delay, premature birth, congenital malformations, etc.
Of course, these ingredients enter the body in tiny quantities, but this little fetus is growing, and particularly exposed , due to its small size and the immaturity of its organs, to the toxic substances which reach it.
This is a good reason to monitor the presence of endocrine disruptors (they are found in 70% of foundations, such as parabens and phthalates, to name a few), allergens , carcinogens and other toxic ingredients that populate our cosmetics. To find out more, consult our list of ingredients not recommended during pregnancy (such as essential oils) – completely absent from the formulations of your Daylily face and body treatments ;-)
Also be careful with products containing perfume (if the perfume is not specifically suitable for pregnant women): they can promote the appearance of melasma (the mask of pregnancy) or worsen its appearance, in addition to containing possible allergens, alcohol, etc.
Wearing makeup safely during pregnancy
The solution, if you don't want to spend hours deciphering the labels of your eyeshadows and lipsticks? Opt for natural or organic products, whose compositions are often much stricter than those of classic perfumery or supermarket products and ask if they do not contain any ingredients not recommended during pregnancy . Furthermore, many “ cleaner ” brands meeting strict formulation criteria have emerged in recent years, take advantage of them! They may be more suitable for pregnancy.
Varnishes are one of the most toxic makeup products on the market – mainly because of the presence of solvents . As the organic or 100% natural version of nail lacquer does not yet exist, if you absolutely cannot do without it, the best thing is to opt as a precaution for “ 10-free ” versions (in which the 10 substances the most harmful have been banned), and to only apply it from time to time, for special occasions!
During pregnancy, no product applied to the skin of the face or body is harmless , and makeup is no exception to the rule! However, there is no question of putting away pencils, palettes and brushes: to continue to apply makeup without danger , go for natural products that are safe for pregnancy , to enhance your pretty face without putting your baby at any risk until delivery.
And why not adopt the concept of less is more which advocates light makeup and a natural effect, for a radiant and luminous complexion without suffocating the skin? Either way, we are sure that you will be the most beautiful mother-to-be :-)
