Maternity clothes: how to dress while pregnant?

February 22, 2021 Cédric Freppel

You are pregnant and big changes are on the horizon: your diet, your beauty routine and your clothes will undergo some changes to best support your new needs as a mother-to-be! Are you wondering how to dress well, stay comfortable and fashionable during pregnancy while showing off your new curves ? We give you some tips for keeping your clothes as long as possible , and expanding your wardrobe with some timeless and extremely comfortable pieces that will accompany you until you give birth!

Keeping your clothes on during pregnancy: our advice

The arrival of a baby is often synonymous with expenses and even if it is pleasant to equip yourself and prepare for his arrival by buying him his little things, the bill can quickly become steep ;) In this context, you may have - want to not spend too much money on your wardrobe and continue to wear your usual clothes for as long as possible.

During the first trimester, this is quite easy because your belly remains discreet. Especially if it is a first child : your silhouette generally changes less quickly than if your body has already carried one or more babies. Your chest may have gained a little volume, but you can generally continue to wear your sweaters and small tops without problem.

Small aside: don't wait for your shapes to take shape before using anti-stretch mark treatments . As soon as you announce your pregnancy, start applying an anti-stretch mark product to your chest and stomach to soften the skin and help it stretch. Our advices ? Opt for Le Lait Fondant in the morning before getting dressed : it penetrates instantly, without leaving a greasy effect, and does not stain clothes. Use in the evening in addition to our Huile Sensorielle. This dry oil allows for long massages: it is ideal after a shower, when you have a little more time to pamper your skin.

In the second trimester, things get complicated because your belly becomes more and more prominent. Your jeans are starting to tighten and your tightest clothes are starting to stretch! The feeling of discomfort increases, you feel – and this is quite normal – cramped.

A tip for sorting through your wardrobe – especially if it is well stocked: make two piles of clothes : on one side, those that no longer fit you, on the other, those that you can still wear. It would be a shame to deprive yourself of a piece that still does the job just because it has been forgotten in a corner of your closet! Many pregnant women are also surprised to see that certain items in their wardrobe, such as dresses, sweaters, cardigans or leggings, turn out to be very stretchy and will accompany them until maternity.

To continue wearing your jeans (other than with the top button undone, it goes without saying ;)), there is a clever accessory: the pants widener. It is a piece of fabric with elastic and buttons, which attaches to your jeans. These adjusters come in different colors and are a great solution for transforming your favorite pants, shorts and skirts into maternity clothes !

Perfectly discreet if you wear a long t-shirt, you can also wear them with a sweater or a shorter t-shirt by camouflaging the subterfuge with a headband also called a pregnancy belt. While headbands are very practical for supporting your stomach, they are also perfect for hiding the ends of clothing that has become too small. And hop, neither seen nor known!

What maternity clothes to buy?

Following rapid weight gain, you may quickly feel cramped in your usual clothes – even with a pants expander! It will then be time to buy a few pieces in your size to enhance your wardrobe, items that will follow you until maternity, or even after childbirth during the breastfeeding period. Choose soft and supple materials, such as jersey, cotton blend, viscose and knit . If the fabric is organic or Oekotex certified - that is to say without substances harmful to health - it's even better for you and your baby ;)

You certainly won't cut it: bras to support your new shapes will quickly prove essential. It is likely that you will have to change size several times during your pregnancy and after childbirth to maintain comfort and support. If you plan to breastfeed your baby, you can directly purchase nursing bras that will also be used after birth.

Among the most popular basics for pregnant women are leggings which are ultra comfortable and easy to wear. According to future mothers, maternity jeans and their headband are particularly pleasant to wear, treat yourself to some pants that hug your stomach well ! Also think about the ultimate maternity clothing: overalls, in denim or a dressier black fabric, to get you through these nine months in style!

You may also need to invest in seasonal pieces or clothing for special occasions : a new coat if yours is becoming a bit complicated to close or a swimsuit if you are enjoying a seaside vacation or continuing the swimming, an excellent sport during pregnancy.

Expecting a baby is not always an easy time: your silhouette changes visibly and you don't always feel comfortable with new shapes. Allowing yourself a little shopping , making a purchase or two can also be good solutions to accept your new body , and feel beautiful and feminine until giving birth.

Where to buy maternity clothes?

You are spoiled for choice, because many fashion brands now offer “pregnant women” sections. T-shirts, dresses, and sweaters are designed in stretchy and comfortable materials, to ensure support for your stomach and highlight your pretty shapes. H&M, Kiabi, Vertbaudet, Gemo, Bon Prix… the store collections are quickly renewed, are particularly trendy and combine comfort and fashion for the well-being of future mothers.

You can also turn to brands specializing in maternity clothing, such as Seraphine, Envie de Fraise or Neuvième Ciel. The latter sublimates women during their pregnancy but also after. You can find nursing or baby clothes there. Their big plus: the clothes are made in France!

Do you have a small budget or don't want to spend too much? Second hand is yours: you will find clothes in excellent condition and for a handful of euros on second-hand sites, in empty dressing rooms or childcare markets. You may have a friend, a colleague or a cousin who is a young mother who will be delighted to lend you some maternity clothes.

An alternative solution, excellent for the planet: renting clothes for pregnant women. There are now box systems that allow you to stay stylish during pregnancy, without overfilling your closets. The way it works is simple: as soon as you get tired, you receive new clothes. And after the birth, you send them back and you find your little everyday outfits!

When you take a closer look, it's easy to dress well during pregnancy and adapt your wardrobe to your desires and your budget. Keep your usual clothes as long as possible, buy a few pieces necessary for pregnancy and breastfeeding, or go for second-hand clothes at low prices! We hope that these tips and advice have helped you see things more clearly. All that remains is for us to wish you a wonderful pregnancy, full of style !
