A bath right after giving birth, good or bad idea?
Right after your baby is born, your body may be weakened and needs time to recover. Swimming must often be postponed for a few weeks, in order to enjoy it better afterwards!
The main risk: infection of the uterus
If you have had a vaginal birth, without any particular complications, you can take a shower just after the baby is born.
Several reasons for this: on the one hand because the cervix, post-partum, is not yet closed. It will take several weeks for things to return to normal and for the uterus to return to its initial size and position. The risk of infection must therefore be limited at all costs during this period of time. This is why bathing and swimming of any kind is not recommended, as is the use of sanitary tampons which can carry germs.
It is generally recommended to avoid bathing during the lochia period, which is marked by significant post-partum blood flow. Lochia should be distinguished from the return of childbirth: your body eliminates the last remains of this pregnancy (blood clots, debris from the uterine mucosa, placenta residue, etc.). Their duration varies greatly from one woman to another, but it It generally takes between 4 to 6 weeks for the bleeding to stop completely, and you can do without sanitary napkins or menstrual panties .
In the event of a cesarean scar: caution is required
Another point that you must take into account: your method of delivery, and any stitches that go with it! Perhaps you gave birth by cesarean section, or vaginally, receiving an episiotomy or a few stitches along the way. In this case, it is advisable to wait until the wound is completely closed and the pain has subsided before remaining in the water for a prolonged period. Here again, it takes between 2 weeks (for a few absorbable threads in the vagina) to 4 weeks (for a cesarean incision in the stomach) for the wound to be completely healed and no longer oozing.
It is best to avoid softening the skin during this time. It is also recommended, after each shower, to gently wipe the wound, or even dry it with a hairdryer to prevent it from developing in an overly humid environment. If you have any doubt, your midwife will be able to check the healing and give you the green light. Patience, you will soon be able to enjoy good hot baths without risk of infection! In any case, always wait until the wound is well closed and you no longer feel any pain, the wound must be perfectly healed before considering enjoying a good bath.
Be careful when swimming in the sea and in the pool
The same precautions, mentioned previously, apply for swimming in the sea and swimming pool sessions. If swimming is an excellent post-partum sport for gently returning to physical activity, you will only be able to indulge in it at the end of the lochia - or even after your perineal rehabilitation with a midwife if you need more do one, which is the case for most women who have just given birth.
