What is SPF?
SPF comes from English and stands for Sunburn Protection Factor. In French, we talk about SPF (Solar Protection Factor) or IP (Protection Index). Because all these terms really mean only one thing: the level of protection of your sunscreen. There are 4 levels of protection: low from 0 to 6, medium from 15 to 25, high from 30 to 50, and very high for indices 50+.The term total screen has disappeared to make way for SPF50+ and not to mislead consumers by suggesting that sun care could filter 100% of UVA-UVB rays.
Each index blocks a different percentage of UV: 92% for SPF20, 95% for SPF30, and 98% for SPF50+. The difference may not seem huge from one index to another, but it can make a big difference depending on your phototype and skin sensitivity .
While dark, mixed or black skin can consider a lower protection index, light skin should opt for high protection. When you're expecting a child, the question doesn't even arise: SPF50+ is your best chance of keeping pregnancy mask dark spots – or melasma – at bay.
