Stopping contraception
Often, the first step in the journey to pregnancy is stopping birth control. Even if not all women are affected, 71.9% of them still used a contraceptive method in 2016 according to a report from Public Health France. If the pill remains the most preferred method, there are many others such as the IUD or the implant. In any case, after stopping any form of contraception, your body may take a little time to regulate itself and return to a regular hormonal cycle . Nothing abnormal, Mother Nature is just slowly taking back her rights!
Contraception or not, when you want to become parents, the first information to keep in mind (and not the least) is that a baby does not always arrive so quickly! It takes several tries. The average time for women in France is around 7 months of trying before getting pregnant . This is obviously a figure that remains indicative, and while some women become pregnant quickly, others can take a year or more.
Intercourse and ovulation period, what is the right timing?
We will surely not teach you anything by telling you that the only natural method of having a child is to make love with your partner, but you still need to know when! Indeed, giving birth to a baby is firstly the meeting between two beings (you and your loved one), then that of an oocyte and a sperm. And for this second meeting to happen, you must be in your ovulation period , the period when you are most fertile.
Explanations: your hormonal cycle starts on the first day of your period and ends on the first day of the next period. This cycle therefore lasts on average 28 days, but can vary in certain women. During this period, you will go through three respective phases: the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase. Here, it is the middle one that interests us. Ovulation is in fact the moment when the ovary expels an egg ready to be fertilized by a sperm: this moment arrives 14 days before the end of the cycle and therefore the arrival of the first period. As sperm can live up to 5 days inside the cervix, this means that the chances of getting pregnant will be greater in the 4 days preceding ovulation and on the day of ovulation.
Obviously making love when you really want to is the best advice we can give you! Also think about the fact that a good diet can boost libido. “Scheduling” these relationships can be a little confusing for both of you in the long run, and the lack of spontaneity can lead to stress and pressure. Try practicing some yoga to relax.
If, however, after a few months of testing you wish to "organize" your reports to increase your chances, you can use applications, some of which are free, which will allow you to easily know your ovulation period. And as each woman is different and menstrual cycles can vary, for greater reliability you can also use a temperature curve or even ovulation tests to obtain a more precise result.
The wait... So dreaded and formidable!
And yes, if the excitement is at its peak at the imminent arrival of a little being in your life, you still have to know how to be patient to become a mother. A happy event, it's an exciting project but one that can take time. As already indicated above, the average in France is around 7 months before you successfully get pregnant. In addition, several factors must also be taken into account, such as age: if fertility is at its maximum at age 20 for women, it then decreases slowly from age 30... For men, the peak fertility is between 30 and 34 years old. So many small details that can extend design time. Take advantage of this time to read books and watch a testimony to learn about pregnancy and childbirth.
However, after a certain stage, if too many doubts and anxieties invade you, talk to your gynecologist during a consultation. He will be able to reassure you and give you advice. He may also refer you for medical examinations if this seems necessary. Keep in mind, however, that we only begin to talk about infertility when contraception has been stopped and intercourse is regular for a period of 12 to 18 months. And we emphasize “regular” (yes, yes!). Indeed, it's a secret that isn't really a secret, but having more sex increases your chances of getting pregnant. Not such a trivial detail in the end when we know that many couples have difficulty having a child for the simple reason that the reports are not numerous enough!
But then, what are regular reports? We speak of regularity when intercourse takes place between two and three times a week. In fact, you have to try to find a happy medium to respect the sperm cycle. These are renewed approximately every three days. If there are too many reports, the quality of the sperm weakens. Thus, by spacing out intercourse and therefore leaving the sperm to rest, you will then increase your chances of releasing a larger volume of healthy sperm ready to fertilize!

And the wait... of those around you
The prepartum period is sometimes a difficult time to live in society. Indeed, it is not uncommon for those around you, however caring, to start asking you questions about your desire to give birth (who has never heard the famous “so when will it be?!”) and to remind you that your biological clock is ticking. Not mean but rather clumsy, these thoughts and advice can become unpleasant and burdensome for you and your relationship. In these cases, humor often helps. So don't forget that your desire to have children is a personal choice and that "breaking news": your biological clock only looks at you ! Preparing for pregnancy can already be stressful enough, there's no need to add more.
If these remarks persist and irritate you, calmly (or with humor) explain to your loved ones that these types of questions are indiscreet and that they can be hurtful for couples having difficulty procreating. And above all, the desire for a baby is your private life, you do not have to share it.
Test time
Finally ! Do you think you see the first signs of pregnancy appearing? Only one way to be sure, do a test !
You can buy a urine pregnancy test at a pharmacy or supermarket . There are different types, some digital, others more classic, but in all cases the principle remains the same. Simply urinate on the tab of the tester provided for this purpose. After a few minutes, the result appears. These tests are known to be 99% certain. We still advise you to consult a doctor. During this consultation, he will carry out an assessment with a blood test for 100% reliable results.
Fingers crossed that the result meets your expectations, but in any case, don't forget that a baby project is exciting but becoming a mother can also take time! Becoming parents requires patience. Is your test positive? Find out how to announce a pregnancy.
