Coffee and latte during pregnancy
As future mothers know, some precautions should be taken during pregnancy in terms of diet. Sushi, raw milk cheeses, cold meats, among others, are among the foods not recommended when you are pregnant, and your gynecologist may have asked you to review your meals along these lines.
What about the drinks you consume, especially coffee, latte or decaffeinated?
Coffee, due to the caffeine it contains, is a stimulant: it acts on your nervous system to boost it, and produces that little boost effect that many seek in the morning, or during the day to regain a little energy. 'energy !
When pregnant, you may be more sensitive to the effects of caffeine : sleep problems, palpitations, and nervousness may be present.
Coffee can also aggravate minor pregnancy ailments , such as heartburn, nausea, or fluid retention . This diuretic drink also encourages you to urinate more often, thus limiting the absorption of iron in your body – an element that is essential for your good shape and your baby's growth!
Coffee and baby in utero
What about that little baby who is growing in utero? Is it sensitive to coffee absorption? Well yes !
Just like you, your little one feels the effects of caffeine . Baby may be more energetic after your morning cup of latte! But caffeine can also cause problems with fetal development in the long term.
Studies on mice have shown that women consuming large amounts of caffeine were more likely to give birth to low-weight babies. This growth delay can also be combined with a delay in brain development . Researchers have shown that caffeine could have repercussions on children: more epileptic seizures, more difficulty finding one's way in space, more mental disorders... The results are hardly encouraging!
Caffeine could also be a vector of miscarriage and increase the risk of premature birth : if studies are underway to formally prove the cause and effect link, it is advisable to remain cautious during pregnancy and limit your coffee consumption in all its forms: black coffee, latte, café macchiato, cappuccino, iced coffee...
But also caffeine that can be contained in certain cosmetics , such as slimming or anti-cellulite creams, which sometimes use this ingredient as an active ingredient. Fortunately, in our Baume Onctueux , there is no caffeine, so you can use it during pregnancy in complete safety.
How much coffee during pregnancy?
The WHO – the World Health Organization – recommends not exceeding 300 mg of caffeine per day while expecting a baby. Other studies lower this threshold to 200 mg per day as a precautionary measure.
A typical cup of coffee generally contains between 95 and 200 mg of caffeine. Be careful with large format coffees purchased in coffee shops: their caffeine concentration is generally high and can easily exceed the threshold authorized for a pregnant woman.
You will therefore need to be vigilant about the quantity of caffeine present in your beverage , because it can vary by a factor of three depending on the brand and type of coffee consumed.
Also be careful with other drinks or foods that contain caffeine : tea, sodas (such as Coca Cola), as well as a pleasure food that may be part of your pregnancy cravings: chocolate!
If it is essential to hydrate well during pregnancy and breastfeeding (it is recommended to drink at least 1.5L of water per day), keep in mind that coffee, if it is not prohibited , however, should be consumed in moderation, just like tea . No question of depriving yourself of it if you are addicted to your morning latte: in reasonable quantities, this small cup of coffee will not do you any harm.
Pregnant women can turn to “decaf” whose caffeine content is significantly reduced compared to normal coffee.
Your pregnancy will perhaps also be an opportunity to discover new drinks and new flavors: think about healthy, risk-free alternatives full of taste, such as herbal teas, fruit waters and broths which will allow you to hydrate well until 'at birth, without asking you any questions!
