Pregnant: which herbal teas to take care of you?

February 14, 2025 Maëlys Bélier

You are expecting a happy event, and you know that drinking in sufficient quantities is essential for your health and that of the baby. If you have decided to focus on the benefits of herbal herbal teas on a daily basis, you may be wondering – and rightly so – if all herbal teas can be consumed during pregnancy? Are there any plants not recommended as infusions? Which ones can help you have a peaceful pregnancy? Here are some answers to enjoy the benefits of herbal teas while expecting a baby.

  1. Why drink herbal teas during pregnancy?
  2. Which herbal tea to avoid during pregnancy?
  3. Which herbal tea during pregnancy?
  4. Nausea Saver Herbal Tea, to reduce pregnancy nausea

Why drink herbal teas during pregnancy?

When pregnant, it is important to drink well and increase your water consumption to reach 1.5 to 2 L of water per day.

This water intake is beneficial for the baby (water carries the nutrients, vitamins and minerals essential for its proper development, and supplies the amniotic fluid pocket) but also for the mother!

Drinking enough helps increase blood circulation, reduces water retention problems and the feeling of heavy legs, and limits the risk of constipation and urinary infections, which are common during pregnancy.

Although tea and coffee are not prohibited, their consumption must be limited due to their caffeine and theine content, which can be harmful to the baby's nervous system. Since 2002, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended consumption of less than 300 mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy (1). Be careful, the caffeine content varies greatly from one drink to another: a cup of filter coffee can contain between 60 and 180 mg (2), a cup of green or black tea generally does not exceed 60 mg of caffeine. .

To maintain the ritual of hot drinks with colleagues, you may want to turn to herbal teas ! Drinking herbal tea when you are pregnant is in fact an excellent way to maintain good body hydration , while varying the taste pleasures, and enjoying the benefits of the plants that make them up – even more so if you choose organic herbal teas. As such, you may be wondering if all herbal blends are suitable for a mother-to-be and are good for your health and that of your future baby...

Which herbal tea to avoid during pregnancy?

Herbal tea to avoid during pregnancy

As you know, the nine months of pregnancy are punctuated by prohibitions for pregnant women, and herbal teas are no exception to the rule! Certain plants can in fact modify your hormonal balance, going so far as to increase the risk of miscarriage. Others should be avoided because their safety in pregnant women has not been clearly established.

Among the plants to avoid are peppermint , licorice or sage which can cause contractions and premature birth (3), or even feverfew (4), known to trigger menstruation.

Red vine herbal teas are well known for improving venous return and reducing the feeling of heavy legs and retention. As a precautionary measure and because there is currently a lack of data, the consumption of red vine is not recommended during pregnancy by the European Medicines Agency.(5)

Which herbal tea during pregnancy?

As a general rule, all fruit-based infusions can be consumed during pregnancy.

Tea fans can advantageously replace it with a cup of rooibos – wrongly called red tea, because it comes from a South African shrub, and not from the tea fields. Rich in iron and vitamins and free of theine, a rooibos infusion is a great alternative for pregnant women!

Certain plants have proven virtues to relieve minor health problems encountered during pregnancy, for example Mallow flowers in infusion act on constipation, a well-known inconvenience for pregnant women.

Finally, the great classics such as verbena, lime blossom and lemon balm can be consumed at all stages of pregnancy and during breastfeeding: their relaxing and calming effect can help you get quality sleep and reduce stress.

Certain herbal teas, contraindicated in the first months of pregnancy, can become particularly useful in the 9th month when childbirth is looming... We are thinking in particular of raspberry leaf herbal tea, which your midwife may have told you about. . It is said that the latter has the ability to relax the uterus and make contractions very effective, which makes it the favorite herbal tea for future mothers at the end of pregnancy!
