Water and hydration during pregnancy, what you need to know

Although it is not recommended to eat for two during pregnancy, it is recommended to drink a lot more water! From the inside and out, it is very important to remember to hydrate properly during pregnancy.

While it's not advisable to eat for two during pregnancy, it is recommended to drink much more water ! From the inside out, it's very important to remember to stay properly hydrated during pregnancy.

Water needs increase during pregnancy

Did you know that a pregnant woman's water needs increase from 1.5 liters to 2 liters per day ? Proper hydration means good bowel function, reducing the risk of constipation. It also helps prevent urinary tract infections, nausea, and water retention. Good hydration during pregnancy also ensures the transport of nutrients to the fetus. Increasing your fluid intake therefore means better functioning of your body , as well as that of your baby.

Why drink water during pregnancy?

To guarantee the volume of amniotic fluid

A pregnant woman's water needs increase to promote healthy maternal-fetal circulation and ensure sufficient amniotic fluid and blood volume for the fetus's proper development! She carries an extra 7 to 10 liters of water ! Drinking 2 liters of water per day is essential for the health of both the expectant mother and her baby.

To prevent urinary tract infections

During pregnancy, the urinary tract functions somewhat less efficiently, and bacteria are not properly eliminated through urine. This increases the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Drinking more fluids helps to eliminate urine more frequently and thus prevent UTIs in expectant mothers.

To reduce water retention

During pregnancy, a woman may experience water retention. By drinking more water, preferably low-sodium water, a pregnant woman can limit this problem because it helps eliminate more waste. This is one of the best tips for preventing the heavy legs often experienced by pregnant women. Furthermore, it will help limit weight gain since you will be retaining less fluid.

Which water should I choose during pregnancy?

Choose a very low-mineral water for pregnancy!

With increased water requirements, the kidneys are put under greater strain. During pregnancy, the kidneys filter more water, increasing from 180L to 240L per day. It's therefore important to avoid overloading the kidneys with minerals to maintain their proper function. This is why it's recommended to choose a very low-mineral water , such as Mont Roucous . Avoid dehydration!

Dehydration can harm your health and your baby's. If you have a fever or are in hot weather, compensate for fluid loss by drinking more water! A tip: drink regularly throughout the day, without waiting until you feel thirsty. You can vary your drinks, with detox waters or herbal teas, but remember that what you should drink in the most quantity is simply water.

Compensate for your physical needs with your diet:

Remember to eat fruits and vegetables too; they're full of water. This will help you stay hydrated! We tend to forget, but food also contains liquids. A varied and balanced diet will also contribute to your baby's healthy development.
