How does the pregnancy mask appear?
The pregnancy mask is characterized by the appearance of brown spots on the face and neckline of pregnant women.
In question ? Hormones ! The sharp increase in estrogen levels leads to an overproduction of melanin . Melanin are these pigments produced naturally by the body, which give a nice tan to your skin when you expose yourself. When melanocytes produce melanin in excess , pigmented spots appear under the action of the sun.
The pregnancy mask, also called melasma, chloasma or wolf mask appears on the face. The latter then becomes studded with brown spots, more or less significant in size and intensity, which invade the cheeks, nose, forehead, and sometimes the neck and décolleté. They have nothing to do with freckles, which are genetic and on which it is not possible to act.
Note that the overproduction of melanin is also responsible for the famous “ brown line ” on the stomach of future mothers, even if the mechanism and conditions for the appearance of this line are still unknown.
These brown spots, often unsightly, can affect all skin types and phototypes. However, we note that dark skin is often more affected. There are also family predispositions to pregnancy masks: ask the women in your family about this :-)
After childbirth, melasma gradually fades – you may have to wait until the end of breastfeeding to see the pigmented spots fade. In some cases, unfortunately, it persists well after birth, and it becomes quite complicated to eliminate it completely. It then requires treatment by a dermatologist , who can offer you a peel, to remove the first layer of the epidermis, or laser sessions. A restrictive, expensive solution, and often with variable results…
The good news is that pregnancy masks can be avoided by adopting simple actions from the start of your pregnancy !
What solutions to prevent pregnancy mask?
The pregnancy mask generally appears during the second or third trimester, but you are not protected from it until then. Its appearance is often sudden and unexpected ! This is why we advise you to take precautions as soon as the happy event is announced, without waiting until the end of the third month of pregnancy .
Objective No. 1? Protect your skin from UV rays as much as possible. To do this, avoid exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when solar radiation is at its strongest, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and of course, seek shade whenever possible. !
We often believe that the mask of pregnancy occurs more when we are on vacation at the sea, or when we live in the South: if it is true that the sunshine is more intense in these conditions, and requires particular vigilance, you can absolutely fall victim to pigmented spots in winter, in an urban living environment. UVA-UVB rays are everywhere , and cause damage to the skin even in the city, where we do not necessarily have the reflex to systematically protect our skin before going outside. From now on, just one watchword: sun protection !
Like you, we don't like sunscreens that give a whitish, sticky effect to the skin. The sink complexion, no thanks! To combine effectiveness and pleasure of use, we have created Crème Radieuse SPF50+ , a 2-in-1 day cream that intensely hydrates your face upon waking and protects it from sun damage in a single step. It contains mineral and synthetic sunscreens that are 100% safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as Annatto Oil , a natural sun protection used for millennia in South America. The Océadéfense which also composes it, a natural active ingredient from a micro-algae, protects the skin from external aggressions and promotes cellular repair .

Because the skin of future mothers often becomes drier, we have added vegetable glycerin as well as Fucocert , two active ingredients whose moisturizing properties are no longer in doubt.
Hypoallergenic, this treatment is suitable for all skin types, even the most fragile. Our advice? Apply it every morning to clean skin: the Radiant Cream absorbs quickly, without leaving a greasy film and thus constitutes a perfect makeup base . Reapply every two hours if exposed to the sun or swimming and don't forget to put it in your handbag to protect your skin in all circumstances.
Sun care does not get a good press, and for good reason: many formulas contain ingredients that are dangerous for the health of pregnant women and their babies. Among them, endocrine disruptors (such as parabens), nanoparticles, suspected or proven allergens... The Daylily Paris cosmetic charter is very strict on this subject: we have identified the main ingredients not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding , which are persona non grata in our formulas so as not to hinder the proper development of this little fetus.
Our anti-stretch mark, anti-cellulite and firming body treatments meet the same requirements: don't hesitate to discover them to create a 100% safe beauty routine while waiting for your little wonder!
