Our Dos and Don'ts to fight cellulite

Cellulite isn't always a welcome feature for women. Did you know that orange peel skin can worsen during pregnancy ? This is due to increased levels of estrogen and prolactin , two hormones that play a key role in increasing fat reserves in the expectant mother to support her pregnancy and prepare for breastfeeding. So don't panic if you notice cellulite appearing: it's a very common and perfectly normal phenomenon that affects many women!

If you're wondering how to deal with cellulite while expecting a baby, and what to do and avoid on a daily basis, you've come to the right place! We'll explain how to prevent cellulite while you're pregnant.

Actions to avoid to avoid cellulite

Cellulite comes from a change that takes place under the epidermis, in fatty tissues. Fat deposits , greater in number and size, form under the skin. Their presence is obvious when you pinch the skin: it becomes bumpy and less homogeneous. Cellulite, although completely benign, nonetheless remains unsightly and sometimes even painful .

Note that dimpling is not directly linked to weight: even the thinnest bodies can have cellulite! Cellulite increases when blood circulates less well – which is typically the case during pregnancy . The drainage of fats slows down, they tend to stagnate .

Certain simple actions should be avoided on a daily basis so as not to hinder blood circulation.

Cross your legs

Staying static, cross-legged in front of a computer is probably a really bad idea if you want to combat dimpling! Consider taking a regular break and taking a few steps to stretch yourself.

Wearing clothes that are too tight

Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you shouldn't feel beautiful and feminine! However, clothing that is too tight disrupts blood circulation and fat drainage. So we avoid wearing stretch jeans or leather pants while expecting baby!

…and shoes that are too high

Clothes, shoes, same fight! Pumps and all high heels put less strain on our leg muscles , which prevents blood from circulating easily – and therefore effectively draining fats and toxins. We opt for comfortable shoes, flat or slightly elevated.

Stop sugar and fat

Unsurprisingly, a diet too rich in refined sugar and lipids promotes cellulite. Avoid hydrogenated fats such as palm oil, fructose, glucose syrup which are hidden in many industrial dishes. This advice is not always easy to implement when pregnancy cravings attack you, but it is definitely worth following to maintain smooth skin... and to help baby grow well!

Actions to take to avoid cellulite

After reviewing the don’ts, let’s look at the do’s ! Because it is easy to act on a daily basis to limit dimpling and reduce their size and number if necessary.

Practice physical activity regularly

The key to fighting orange peel skin, restarting blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, and at the same time avoiding the feeling of heavy legs, is to move ! Brisk walking, swimming, fitness and pre-natal yoga... Although many sports are prohibited or not recommended during pregnancy, you still have a few options to continue exercising, even while pregnant! Remember to always ask your doctor ’s permission before you start!

Practice rolling palpation

You have certainly heard of this massage technique , palpate-rolling, which consists of kneading the skin by peeling it off and rolling it between the fingers, to promote lipolysis (the destruction of fat cells). This gesture can be performed by hand , with an anti-cellulite suction cup , or in an institute during a pre-natal massage. This technique can be painful : if this is the case, gradually increase the intensity of the massage to keep it comfortable .
