Treating stretch marks after baby is born
If you have just given birth, and your stretch marks are recent, it is still possible to act on the appearance and size of these streaks. This is particularly true if they still have a purplish or red tint – do not hesitate to re-read our special stretch marks article – to fully understand the difference between white and red stretch marks. Treatments are always more effective on red stretch marks than on well-established pearly white stretch marks.
You can in particular use a moisturizing cream or a massage oil with an anti-stretch mark action, and massage the affected areas two to three times a day: this will soften the skin and help it regenerate and repair itself. and prevent stretch marks from spreading or new ones from appearing. Medical treatments against stretch marks: what solutions?
If the results obtained by regular massages do not seem sufficient to you, and you wish to go further in eliminating stretch marks, you may consider more medicalized treatments.
In all cases, it will be appropriate to take stock with your practitioner (doctor, dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon), who will be able to advise you according to the nature of your skin, the age of your stretch marks, and the expected results. The same treatments are not applicable to everyone! And of course, you have to be vigilant during the post-pregnancy period when you want to carry out one of these operations. In any case, they are prohibited before the baby's arrival, and it is imperative to consult your health professional before starting!
Laser treatment to get rid of stretch marks
The laser is one of the first solutions that comes to mind when considering treating a scar. Stretch marks, which are often considered “pregnancy scars”, can also be the subject of laser intervention.
There are different types of lasers, which have in common that they cannot be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Results can also be inconsistent in women with black or mixed skin, who are at risk of producing hyperpigmentation. Finally, laser treatment is not recommended before or during the summer period, because the treated skin must be carefully protected from the sun!
On red stretch marks
The doctor usually uses a pulsed dye laser. The principle ? Its green light destroys the red pigments in the vessels, which will reduce inflammation and encourage the production of collagen and elastin. Your eyes should be protected by glasses. As for inconveniences, laser treatment is not always painless! Burning and tingling sensations may appear during the session, and subsequently, small crusts, redness or bruising, which can be relieved by applying a cold pack and a restorative and soothing cream. After a few sessions, the stretch marks whiten, their spacing decreases to leave only a fine white streak.
On white stretch marks
White stretch marks, well established, are treated by other methods and other types of laser.
Let us cite for example radio-frequency, which consists of passing a high-frequency electric current over the stretch mark. This heat will stimulate the elastic fibers of the skin, and reduce the width and depth of the striae. A healing cream should then be applied.
Another solution for white stretch marks, the fractionated non-ablative laser, which with its barbaric name will simply target and heat the stretch marks to force the skin to produce collagen, and therefore to regenerate. Again, it is recommended to apply a healing cream after the laser session.
Several sessions are generally necessary to obtain visible results. The number of sessions and the type of method used will depend on the size of the area to be treated: your practitioner will be able to tell you about the duration of the treatment, and the results you can expect!
Be aware that laser treatment remains an expensive operation: between €150 and €400 per session, a real small investment for those who want to regain their body after pregnancy and who consider these streaks unsightly! Whatever method you choose, don't forget to cherish this body which has brought you the most beautiful gift J
