Pregnancy and cellulite: why does pregnancy promote the appearance of cellulite?
Pregnancy is above all synonymous with epidermal changes: many women notice that being pregnant does not only mean feeling your stomach rounding little by little (except for some very lucky women!), but it also means feeling your skin change , as well as certain other senses (taste, smell, perception of things, etc.), but that is not the point!
If we very often talk about hormonal acne, pregnancy masks or even stretch marks, there is a deeper change in the tissues of your skin: the appearance of cellulite.
As a reminder : cellulite, also known by the name “orange peel”, is characterized by an increase in the volume of fat cells located under the skin . It is located on the thighs, buttocks, stomach and sometimes even on the arms . These growing cells are called adipocytes, and once they are filled with fat, they compress your blood and lymphatic vessels, leading to poor blood circulation and poor elimination of toxins and water under the skin.
Results : your skin is distended, dimples appear... and what's more, cellulite can cause severe pain (as if the feeling of discomfort and daily complexes weren't enough...).
Under the influence of these, fat storage is further stimulated to prepare for the peaceful arrival of the baby (and incidentally allow the future mother to breastfeed in the best conditions), hence the appearance or accentuation of cellulite. Another hormone, prolactin, is also responsible for this phenomenon. And because pregnancy always does things well: your prolactin level increases during this pivotal period! If, like estrogens, prolactin prepares the future mother for the arrival of the baby by making energy reserves in the form of fat, it also promotes water retention and therefore by definition, the appearance of cellulite.
Finally, the weight and volume of the baby during the last trimester must also be taken into account in the list of main causes: they too can be responsible for poor blood and lymphatic circulation by compressing the vessels.
During pregnancy: how to limit the appearance of cellulite?
Although it is completely normal and natural to see cellulite appear and develop when you are pregnant (since it is also a sign that your body is preparing for the arrival of the baby), there are however some instructions to follow daily to prevent the phenomenon from taking hold.
1/ Reduce cellulite during pregnancy
You probably suspect: everything happens on your plate!
First of all, avoid excess fats, particularly animal fats and those called “hidden” fats (but which are actually found in cheese, cold meats, fried foods, pastries, etc.). But as your body also needs good fats, choose foods rich in omega-3 : focus on eating fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel) because they are favorable to the good development of the baby's brain. Also consider reducing your salt intake .
Avoid staying in the same position for too long , especially sitting or cross-legged, as you risk suddenly seeing swelling linked to water retention. Also be careful about wearing high heels and clothing that is too tight, which is very bad for good blood circulation. To help you limit this water retention, think about the famous “compression stockings”, which now exist in the form of socks, stockings or tights and which are much less old-fashioned than before. In addition, they are reimbursed by health insurance, you just need to ask your midwife or doctor for a prescription!
Try if you can – and after following your doctor’s instructions – to practice a gentle activity compatible with your pregnancy, allowing you to remain active without tiring. Swimming or yoga can do the trick, as well as a daily walk at a leisurely pace. But remember to listen to your body first!
Did you know ? There are several types of cellulite, and the type that appears during your pregnancy is called watery cellulite. It is called that because your tissues become clogged with water to store fat.
But do not panic ! This watery cellulite, most of the time, fades after childbirth. Indeed, the relief of your body will then restart your blood circulation and allow the tissues to unclog. This is good news !
On the other hand, most women will exchange this type of cellulite for another: adipose, which is the result of a lack of exercise and a poor diet. To the wise!
2/ Reduce cellulite after pregnancy
The first solution to help you reduce your cellulite after pregnancy is, if you can, to breastfeed for as long as possible: in fact, it is proven that breastfeeding helps you lose weight and reduces the cellulite that occurs. is installed. This is explained by the fact that to produce milk, your body will draw directly from your fat reserves! And what's more, breastfeeding strengthens the bond with your baby... What more could you ask for?
But as all women are not equal when it comes to motherhood, there are some for whom breastfeeding will have no effect, and will even cause them to gain more weight... In this case, do not hesitate to request a thyroid test. Indeed, the thyroid can often be upset after pregnancy and cause weight gain, but also the famous feeling of “baby blues”.
To combat dimples using appropriate treatments, Daylily recommends Baume Onctueux, a firming treatment that combines precious natural anti-cellulite and anti-stretch mark active ingredients. 100% made in France, it is even possible to use it during breastfeeding because it is hypoallergenic and guaranteed without endocrine disruptors, without essential oils, without mineral oils, without alcohol, without phenoxyethanol or dyes.
