Stretch marks, you know them and you often fear them: these purplish red marks invade the stomach or chest of the pregnant woman when the epidermis is no longer able to stretch. The fibers break, resulting in the appearance of brightly colored streaks , similar to scars. The cause is hormones, and in particular cortisol, which lowers elastin and collagen levels – both responsible for the suppleness of the skin – during pregnancy. Good to know: you can improve the appearance of stretch marks as long as they have that red/purplish tint. Once white, it will be too late to dislodge them – unless you consider heavy and expensive dermatological treatments.
