Why does the skin become oily in early pregnancy?
This is sometimes one of the unpleasant surprises that accompany the happy news: the quality of your skin is deteriorating . Either because it becomes drier, with its share of discomfort and tightness, or because it becomes, on the contrary, oilier, with all the inconveniences that this entails (shininess, spots, blackheads, etc.).
In both cases, the culprits are… again and again, the hormones! Estrogens , secreted in large quantities , can trigger acne breakouts , as in adolescence. The mechanism is simple: under the action of hormones, the sebaceous glands begin to produce too much sebum. This hyperseborrhea makes the skin of the face shine and suffocates the pores which become blocked, causing the appearance of pimples, redness, micro-cysts and blackheads.
Pregnancy acne can affect any pregnant woman, but you will be more prone to it if you have oily or combination skin, or if you experienced severe acne during your teenage years or during your previous pregnancy. . It is estimated that one in two women experience acne problems while expecting a child.
Imperfections can appear on the T zone (nose-forehead-chin) or on the entire face, as well as on the neck, décolleté and sometimes even the shoulders.
How to treat oily skin during pregnancy?
First step: adopt a healthy lifestyle if this is not yet the case.
Remember to drink regularly : water helps drain toxins and thus have a brighter complexion and a well-hydrated face.
Skin health also depends on your diet ! Certain foods, too rich in fat and sugar, which are found in large quantities, particularly in prepared meals, should be avoided as much as possible. There is no question of depriving yourself, especially since you need energy to carry out this pregnancy, but rather to balance your meals , by eating everything and giving pride of place to fruits, vegetables, in particular those that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E , which are excellent for the skin. Don't forget to regularly consume what we call " good fats " (oilseeds, fatty fish, oils rich in Omega 3 and 6, etc.), which are excellent for you and for your baby!
The sun should absolutely be avoided : if it seems to dry out the skin at first, the rebound effect is real after a few days and you end up with (even) more acne. It is also responsible for the mask of pregnancy , these brown spots which appear on the faces of pregnant women. Whatever your skin type, think about sun protection, a hat and sunglasses as soon as you step outside. Our Radiant Cream SPF50+ is perfect for this :-)
If your skin suddenly becomes shiny and acne-prone at the start of pregnancy, you will need to review your beauty routine and adopt new actions to calm inflammation and reduce shine .
An important point to start with: you may have anti-acne treatments in your cupboards that you think you will bring out to tackle the problem. Bad idea, because most contain teratogenic ingredients , that is, harmful to the health of the fetus. It is better not to use this type of product without having the approval of your gynecologist or midwife. Generally speaking, it is safer, when it comes to cosmetics, to opt for brands specializing in pregnancy, such as Daylily Paris . You can therefore be sure that they are free of dangerous or controversial substances during pregnancy , such as essential oils, endocrine disruptors, or even alcohol.
The key word for taking care of your skin that has become very oily during pregnancy is gentleness ! It should be cleaned without stripping it, and moisturized without suffocating it. This will help it regulate sebum production .
Opt for a gentle cleanser , for example a cleansing foam or a rich bar which washes the face while nourishing it with great delicacy. This goes without saying: it is better to avoid for a few months coarse scrubs which fuel a vicious circle : your skin is apparently perfectly clean, but the aggression suffered by the skin immediately results in sebum production which intensifies a little more – just like the imperfections. Also avoid rubbing your face , rubbing it, and favor gentle gestures. And of course, don't pick at your pimples otherwise you'll get a worse sentence!
When it comes to care, opt for melting, ultra-fluid textures that penetrate without being heavy . To maintain this lightness, also avoid makeup that is too occlusive , such as well-covering foundations. Tempting, certainly, to camouflage the damage, they do not, however, help to improve the problem in the long term . To tame shine during the day, and restore freshness to the complexion, consider mattifying papers : easy to slip into a handbag, they absorb excess sebum in one gesture and immediately give you clear skin.
