Why pay attention to the composition of your shower gel when you are pregnant?
During pregnancy, it is better to pay particular attention to the composition of the products you apply to your body and face, whether they are rinsed off – like shower gel and shampoo – or not, like your evening cream. or lipstick . Some cosmetic products contain components that are toxic to babies, which can interfere with their proper development. Keep in mind that anything you put on your skin can potentially cross the placental barrier and some harmful ingredients can lead to malformations, stunted growth and even premature births.
You may have noticed that in many pregnant women , the skin tends to be drier. Some shower gels may contain drying and irritating ingredients, such as sulfates, which should absolutely be avoided to keep the skin supple and well hydrated and avoid crocodile skin. You must therefore focus on treatments that gently cleanse the skin, while preventing dehydration.
Shower gel: what ingredients to avoid when you are pregnant?
We won't hide it from you, many substances should be avoided, which doesn't necessarily make the choice very easy for a mother-to-be!
- All products containing endocrine disruptors of course, such as parabens, phthalates, triclosan, etc.
- Sulfates, these surfactants with a very pleasant foaming power in the shower, but which in return can weaken sensitive skin and alter the hydrolipidic film – at the same time promoting the passage of harmful substances into the body.
- Allergens, which are often hidden in the fragrances of skincare products, whether synthetic or from nature.
- Mineral oils are one of the cheap chemicals, but they tend to prevent the skin from breathing and provide no added value.
- The same goes for alcohol, which dries out the skin...and which is strongly not recommended for baby's health.
This list is far from exhaustive, and to learn more about the subject, we invite you to consult our article on ingredients not recommended during pregnancy.
Are organic shower gels a good option for pregnant women?
It's difficult to navigate the INCI lists, which are often tiny and full of incomprehensible names... We can then say - and this seems entirely logical - that the simplest thing is to buy organic products, shower gels or superfatted soaps, even if here again, between natural products, those with a label like Ecocert or Nature et Progrès, you can quickly get lost... It is true that organic generally guarantees cleaner formulations than conventional products. But be careful, because not all labels are equal, and even organic skincare products can contain substances that should be avoided by a pregnant woman.
Examples include essential oils, which can cause an allergic reaction. Very concentrated, they can be harmful to the fetus and are almost all not recommended during pregnancy. Another example, sunscreen: essential to prevent pregnancy mask, it can contain nanoparticles in particular, which should again be avoided when expecting a baby. And this, even organic!
To avoid taking any risks, the ideal is to turn to treatments compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding, which have been the subject of in-depth studies and whose formulations have been validated by experts, such as all Daylily Paris treatments.
