What is pregnancy urticaria?
Pregnancy urticaria is one of the different forms of hives that exist. We distinguish in particular between cold and sun urticaria, angioedema and delayed pressure urticaria. The inflammation can be due to a contact or food allergy, to autoimmune diseases, it can also be linked to asthma or to a reaction following taking a medication - which can go as far as to cause angioedema…
If “ classic ” urticaria can have different very distinct causes, this dermatosis in the mother-to-be remains poorly understood, since the origin of this disease has not been clearly established.
The symptoms are similar to classic hives and appear as a rash. Pregnant women notice the appearance of papules (small pink spots) and red patches, often dry and rough , on the stomach, and sometimes on the arms, hips and buttocks. These lesions often appear in the lines of pregnancy stretch marks and are accompanied by irritation and intense itching. Attacks can be acute: it's hard not to scratch!
However, no worries for the baby's health: an attack of pregnancy hives has no impact on the unborn child.
How to treat pregnancy hives?

If the itching becomes too severe and your wounds ooze, it is necessary to consult your doctor or gynecologist who will establish a precise diagnosis and rule out other pathologies. If pregnancy urticaria is confirmed, he will prescribe antihistamine-type medications or a stronger treatment, based on corticosteroids, to relieve the itching.
Two pieces of good news if you have pregnancy urticaria: there is no risk of it becoming chronic since the lesions disappear spontaneously a few days or weeks after delivery, and you are not at greater risk of seeing these plaques return during a subsequent pregnancy!
