What causes red stretch marks?
Stretch marks appear when the skin is subjected to strong tension and reaches its limits in terms of flexibility and elasticity. Concretely, the elastic fibers are no longer able to stretch, and a tear occurs in the deep dermis , between the epidermis and the hypodermis.
This tear becomes immediately visible: red or purple welts appear, reflecting the inflammation of the deep dermis which has “cracked” spontaneously.
This lack of elasticity of the skin can have different origins : a significant hormonal fluctuation, significant weight gain or, on the contrary, rapid weight loss put a strain on the stretching of the skin... This is why adolescent girls, pregnant women, young mothers are particularly concerned!
During pregnancy, during the second trimester, the amount of cortisol increases significantly. This hormone, secreted by the adrenal glands, causes a reduction in collagen production. Since collagen is responsible for the elasticity of the skin, it stretches less easily and therefore becomes prone to stretch marks!
A chain reaction that we would gladly do without, because stretch marks can quickly invade the stomach and chest, of course, but also the hips, thighs, lower back and buttocks.
Stretch marks are common: it is estimated that 50 to 70% of women will see these streaks appear during their first pregnancy, more or less pronounced. Faced with stretch marks, not all women are on an equal footing: those who are expecting a big baby or twins, who have very light or very dark skin, or those whose mother also had stretch marks (the famous hereditary factor!) are more “at risk” than the others. Very thin skin is also more fragile and therefore more prone to the appearance of stretch marks. However, no woman can be sure of being spared and caution remains essential! There are also several actions to adopt on a daily basis to put all the chances on your side and avoid the appearance of purple stretch marks during pregnancy.
How to prevent the appearance of red stretch marks?
Keeping an eye on your scale and avoiding rapid weight gain, even if this is easier said than done, limits the risk of stretch marks appearing in pregnant women. To do this, eat a balanced and varied diet, consume sweet, salty and fatty products in reasonable quantities, avoid ultra-processed industrial dishes, and give pride of place to foods that protect the skin, improve its suppleness and its general appearance. Let us cite in particular:
- Foods rich in vitamin E such as avocado, hazelnut, rapeseed oils, avocado, wheat germ, etc.
- Foods rich in vitamin A : these are generally orange fruits and vegetables, which help repair the skin.
- Essential fatty acids (like Omega 3 ) preserve the strength and elasticity of the skin. They are found in fatty fish; like salmon, herring, sardines... but also in rapeseed, olive, and flax oils, as well as in spinach, salads, cabbage, and in nuts.
- And foods that provide a lot of antioxidants, fruits and vegetables in the lead!
And of course, good hydration is necessary ( 1.5L of water minimum per day for sufficient fluid intake) and a little gentle physical exercise (such as walking or swimming) can only do good for your skin. Moderate sporting activity allows you to maintain a minimum of muscle mass, which contributes to more toned skin, less prone to stretch marks. In addition, by practicing a gentle sport, you activate blood circulation, which helps you maintain beautiful skin and fight against pregnancy cellulite - and the icing on the cake, contribute to your good shape and your good mood !
To put all the chances on your side of avoiding stretch marks, there's nothing like pampering your skin by massaging it with anti-stretch mark creams, specially designed for mothers-to-be. A little ritual to establish as soon as you announce your pregnancy to maximize its effectiveness! Two Daylily products will be your allies during these nine months: our Lait Fondant and our Huile Sensorielle, two treatments to adopt from the start of your pregnancy to say no to stretch marks! And to reinforce the effectiveness of these treatments, you can prepare your skin using the Gant Sublimateur which can be used perfectly with Les Bulles Lavantes for a moment of softness in the shower.

They contain a complex of five organic vegetable oils (Avocado oil, Olive oil, Macadamia oil, Muscat rose oil and Sweet almond oil) for a softening, regenerating and deeply nourishing action! Because these products are intended for pregnant women, they also contain a powerful anti-stretch mark active ingredient, called Dermochlorella : a natural ingredient, of marine origin, champion for stimulating the production of collagen and elastin - responsible as its name l indicates skin elasticity!
It's up to you to make your choice: if you like soft textures, which penetrate quickly, Lait Fondant and its floral scent is made for you! If you prefer the oil texture and longer massages, Sensory Oil and its light biscuit scent will convince you!
The ideal is to adopt this duo daily and apply Le Lait Fondant in the morning, when you are in a hurry, and L'Huile Sensorielle in the evening after a shower, when you have a little more time. Do not hesitate, from the 8th month, to add a third application during the day: it would be a shame to see red stretch marks appear in the home stretch! Don't forget, and this would be even more annoying, that red stretch marks can appear just after childbirth, when the size of your belly visibly decreases. If you are delighted to find your pre-pregnancy body, your epidermis is once again subjected to a severe test. Just one word of advice: spread yourself with cream or oil, again and again!

Little by little, the red stretch marks will fade on their own and become white, pearly. They will then look like scars. Unfortunately, it is more complicated to erase them at this stage, because they are also more anchored in the skin.
Once they have become white, other heavier, more expensive solutions, such as peeling or laser sessions, may be considered by your dermatologist to make the stretch marks disappear. The results of these treatments are often variable: all the more reason to act while they are red!
To sum up !
So let's recap : as a pregnant woman, you are a prime target for these little purple or red streaks that are just waiting to settle on your skin! By adopting a healthy lifestyle, as well as an anti-stretch mark routine in your bathroom, you put all the chances on your side to maintain beautiful, supple, well-hydrated skin during your pregnancy and avoid developing stretch marks. !
