Acupuncture, what is it?
“Alternative medicine”, “alternative”, “natural” or even “holistic”, there is no shortage of qualifying adjectives to try to define this type of practice! Acupuncture is traditional Chinese medicine, that is to say a therapeutic practice not based on the scientific dimension, but rather on the human dimension in its entirety. Here, no antibiotics, treatment or “chemical” process but natural solutions to make you feel better in your body and in your head.
Acupuncture helps to promote a good physical state and acts on the problems that pregnant women may encounter such as fertility and pain during contractions. With more intense labor, it can even help bring forward the term to avoid triggering.
Why practice acupuncture after childbirth: the benefits of postpartum acupuncture
The health benefits of acupuncture are numerous and varied. A few sessions with an acupuncturist can be a real boost in your motherhood, week after week, to help you adapt to your new routine with baby. Here are several good reasons to try it.
Breastfeeding : it is not easy to calmly start breastfeeding, if that is your choice. Indeed, the first weeks require a good capacity to adapt! Baby can be very demanding during the same day. Not to mention the milk surges which can be stubborn: sometimes too much, sometimes not enough, or even problems with engorgement... So many causes which can make this adventure painful and exhausting. Acupuncture can be a good way to relieve these pains as well as to help you relax and now approach this moment with gentleness and serenity. It is also a good alternative when you are breastfeeding and not allowed to take medication.
Sleep disorders: sometimes nights are difficult! It is not easy to go back to sleep with calm and serenity after having experienced such strong emotions as childbirth and the first days that follow with your newborn. In this case, acupuncture can be a good help to relax you and eliminate anxiety to help you slowly return to a pleasant sleep rhythm.
Healing after cesarean section or episiotomy: acupuncture can be very effective in helping to trigger healing. By stimulating certain specific areas of the epidermis, acupuncture promotes and accelerates the healing of the cervix.
Energy boost: lack of sleep or not, mom and dad's days are busy with a newborn, and the lack of energy can quickly be felt even if baby is well behaved. You can also use acupuncture for small drops in energy and help you regain your former dynamism !
Mild depression or baby blues : between pregnancy and childbirth, it's a bit of an emotional roller coaster! It is therefore not uncommon for you to feel slightly depressed in the weeks following the birth. In this situation, it is always recommended to consult a doctor. However, you can ask him to prescribe an acupuncture session to help you get through this moment.
How does an acupuncture session take place?
Generally, an acupuncture session takes place in two parts. First, the acupuncturist invites you to express the reasons for your presence. He may also ask you to talk about your family history, for example. Don’t hesitate to address any topics that are a source of stress for you and ask for advice! This moment is meant to relax you, and for it to work you might as well be as honest as possible. The objective of the session is to draw up an energy assessment which will then help to determine your points to work on and the number of sessions necessary.
For the second part of the session, we get to the heart of the matter! You lie down and the acupuncturist places the needles on different points depending on the disorder you want to treat, in order to stimulate them.
But does it hurt? Yes yes, we can already hear you… “I hate needles!”
Well no ! You can rest assured, acupuncture sessions are practically painless. Despite their sharp appearance, these needles are nonetheless very flexible and will not do you any harm, we guarantee it. Furthermore, the acupuncturist may also be required to use other methods to treat your ailments, including: moxibustion (stimulation of points with heat), suction cups , gentle laser or even electro- acupuncture.
Good to know…
Some acupuncturists allow you to come with your baby and/or your partner. Don't hesitate to ask if it will reassure you!
For the price of the sessions, this varies between 35 and 80 euros. However, with a prescription from your doctor and by consulting a registered acupuncturist (which we strongly recommend), social security reimburses you up to 70%. You can also check with your mutual insurance company, some of them can cover the other part of the reimbursement.
Ready to let yourself be tempted?
Acupuncture sessions after childbirth can be beneficial and really effective in relieving your tensions, regaining balance and enjoying soothing and fusional moments with baby. And it's also a time to think about yourself and reconnect with yourself. Moreover, if you want to prolong the relaxing effect of the session at home, why not treat yourself to a moment of cocooning well-being by using The Baume Onctueux or The Huile Mère-Veilleuse with its seductive scent. Massage your skin in a circular manner for deep penetration and hydration. And for even more relaxation, ask your darling to do the massage!

However, acupuncture does not automatically replace the advice of a doctor. If anxiety, sleep or even depression problems persist, don't forget to also talk to your doctor.
