A healthy lifestyle during pregnancy
Let's start with the most obvious: tobacco, drugs, alcohol and unauthorized medications during pregnancy should be avoided .
Alcohol passes easily from mother to child by crossing the placental barrier. Studies prove that ethanol is found in amniotic fluid in the same proportions as in maternal blood. It can cause growth retardation , malformations or even brain damage in the fetus. Beer, wine and all strong alcohols are affected. To respect this abstinence, you can turn, for a good cause, to non-alcoholic aperitifs.
Coffee and tea should be consumed in moderation : their high caffeine content can cause developmental delays and increase the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. You can still drink your espresso during the day, but preferably away from meals (the caffeine prevents the iron from setting), and without doing cup after cup. The ideal alternative for those addicted to this hot drink? Decaffeinated ! And of course, water remains the best option.
Foods prohibited during pregnancy
The prohibitions continue on your plate – to the great dismay of future mothers, it will be necessary, for prevention, to do without a few small dishes during pregnancy to avoid certain diseases such as listeriosis or salmonellosis .
• Uncooked meats (tartare, carpaccio, raw ham, etc.), raw or lightly cooked fish and eggs (sushi, smoked salmon, homemade mayonnaise, etc.), rillettes , pâtés and artisanal cold meats are prohibited due to the risk of listeriosis. .
• Concerning cooked fish, it is advisable to avoid large fish such as tuna or swordfish, which, at the end of the food chain, have high levels of contamination with heavy metals (such as mercury).
• Raw milk , soft or blue cheeses can be contaminated with bacteria and transmit listeria – they should not be eaten. Hard cheeses and pasteurized milk cheeses have no contraindications .
• At the start of pregnancy, a blood test will be prescribed to determine whether you are immunized against toxoplasmosis . This parasitic infection is transmitted by undercooked or poorly cooked vegetables or meat, with heat eradicating the contamination. If you are not immune, you will need to disinfect uncooked fruits and vegetables growing in the ground with a little white vinegar . Toxoplasmosis is also transmitted by gardening without protection or through contact with cats, which are vectors of the disease.
Sport during pregnancy
During pregnancy, there is no question of stopping sport if you don't want to and your physical condition allows it. You must, of course, have the approval of your doctor or gynecologist . Gentle and regular physical activity helps activate blood circulation – which naturally slows down during pregnancy under the action of hormones – and limits the phenomenon of heavy legs that pregnant women know well. It facilitates transit , lymphatic drainage and helps fight cellulite which often worsens while waiting for a baby.
However, you will not be able to practice just any sport: high-impact physical activities (running, tennis) or which may involve falls or blows (boxing, mountain biking, horse riding, etc.) should be avoided . However, you can easily indulge in walking, swimming, fitness or prenatal yoga, which do not present any particular risks for baby.
Cosmetics and ingredients during pregnancy
In your bathroom too, some precautions are necessary! The cosmetic products you use every day are not free of harmful substances . This concerns hygiene products (shampoo, deodorant , soap, shower gel, etc.) and beauty products: face and body care, makeup, varnish, etc. Their formulas may contain undesirable ingredients during pregnancy: endocrine disruptors, carcinogenic molecules, Allergenic dyes and harmful preservatives can become part of your beauty routine. Organic products have a healthier composition than traditional treatments, but are not without dangers : many contain essential oils (often used as perfume) which are not compatible with pregnancy. These ingredients which are not recommended can have a teratogenic effect, that is to say induce malformations of the embryo . You can find the list of these undesirables in our Pregnancy Cosmetic Guide , to always have at hand.
