What are the steps to get back to your pre-pregnancy belly?
After pregnancy, you must first give the uterus time to return to its initial shape. From the moment of delivery, it begins to lose volume, and it takes 4 to 8 weeks for it to become “like before”. Postpartum contractions (and yes, they are not over!), called the trenches, have the role of helping the uterus return to its usual size. Similar to cramps, they are a little more severe when breastfeeding, because breastfeeding releases oxytocin, a hormone that stimulates the contraction of the uterus.
The trenches are associated with lochia, these heavy bleedings which last a month to a month and a half and which aim to eliminate placental membrane debris, blood clots and lymphatic fluid. They also help reduce uterine volume , and therefore indirectly help you find a flatter stomach. We explain this phenomenon in more detail in a dedicated article.
Among the main concerns of young mothers after pregnancy, we can cite:
- red stretch marks: if you have stretch marks, continue to treat them with targeted treatments (anti-stretch mark cream, balm or oil), which will improve their appearance;
- the brown line: against the brown line, there is not much to do: it will disappear by itself in some time. Your best weapon? Patience !
- a clearly visible cesarean section scar, if you have experienced this method of delivery, it will eventually fade over time;
- a flabby stomach, with distended skin, and a spread navel. Here again, several levers exist to eliminate your last kilos and regain your pre-pregnancy body. Among them, the use of a firming treatment (we'll come back to that shortly), and the resumption of physical activity to regain your muscles. For this, you must have the approval of your gynecologist or midwife. During the postpartum check-up visit, 6 to 8 weeks after delivery, he/she will assess the tone of your perineum. If it is good (we won't hide it from you: it's quite rare for a young mother ;-), you can gradually return to sport. If it is insufficient, you will have to undergo perineal rehabilitation, with specific exercises, to re-muscle this area, which still supported the baby's weight for 9 months! There is also abdominal rehabilitation which allows you to regain a toned stomach after pregnancy. This rehabilitation re-muscles the abdominal belt which has been subjected to severe strain throughout the pregnancy.
You can then indulge in a gentle sporting activity (walking, swimming, etc.), to boost weight loss and regain a wasp waist, then consider doing abs again to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Please note that if you gave birth by cesarean section, perineal rehabilitation and return to sport will be postponed until the healing is perfect and the pain has completely disappeared.
Of course, we recommend that, from the moment you give birth, you drink plenty of water to drain toxins and promote weight loss, and of course, adopt a healthy and varied diet . We're not talking about diet here - your body needs energy after the baby arrives, even more so when breastfeeding - but simply common sense :-)
